Garment Dyeing Meaning
The "tinto in capo" technique consists of dyeing an already made garment in vats filled with the desired pigment. In this process, the white or raw fabric is dyed in the final stage of the manufacturing cycle, unlike traditional processes where the fabrics are already dyed. It is easy to understand the meticulous craftsmanship behind this work, which makes each creation unique and exclusive in its imperfection.
Origins
Garment dyeing is a versatile and particularly ancient technique, as it has been known in Japan as shibori since the 8th century. The name shibori comes from the word “shiboru” which means to squeeze, twist; indeed, the fabrics are folded onto themselves and tied with string, clips, or threads before being dipped in dye. This way, some parts of the fabric do not get dyed, creating original and particular decorations. In general, dyeing fabrics this way is a technique not accessible to everyone, as it requires great effort, attention to detail, and significant economic investment. All these elements ensure that this process is employed worldwide only by a few brands.
Characteristics
Using this technique produces a depth and chromatic intensity impossible to achieve with pre-dyed fabrics. The colors are rich in shades and nuances, making each garment different from the other, almost unique models with a lived-in and handcrafted appearance. After the dye treatment, the garments acquire a patina that could be defined as vintage: the color is not shiny and has a very soft feel.
